Now in just its second Issue, WI Wickets is West Indies cricket’s newest
magazine. Having now already grown from its introduction as an eight
page Supplement in the August 2021 4th Volume first Issue of Wickets
Canada, to sixteen pages in this second edition, WI Wickets can also
justifiably claim to be West Indies crickets’ “fastest-growing baby!”
100% page growth isn’t,
however, the only new feature
in this WI Wickets, September
2021 2nd Issue. Repeat readers
of the August 1st Issue may
have noticed the new banner
on the front page cover of this
edition. Set against a Caribbean
sky blue background, the banner
features the WI Wickets logo flanked on either side by the photos of two persons, a female on the left and
a male on the right. The intention from this Issue onwards will be for the featured photos to be
those of two individuals whom WI Wickets’ three-member Management
Board, comprised of its Publisher Tony McWatt, Managing Editor Joseph
“Reds” Perreira and Editor David Jackson have designated as being worthy
of the title of Most Valuable Persons (MVP) in honour of their respective
accomplishments during the current month. The chosen persons, again one
female and one male, will not necessarily always be players. Administrators,
coaches, media practitioners, umpires, even now retired legendary
former player greats can and will be chosen! Indeed any and everyone
who is involved with West Indies’ cricket in even the slightest manner
will be deemed eligible to be bestowed with the monthly honor, if their
accomplishments so warrant.
This Issue’s featured MVPs are West Indies Women’s cricketer Deandra
Dottin and her male counterpart Royston Chase. Dottin’s award is in
recognition of her having become only the second West Indies Women’s
cricketer to amass over 3000 ODI runs. She reached the landmark during
the third match of the recent West Indies-South Africa ODI Series that was
played in Antigua. Her defiant 123 balls 71, which included 6 fours and 1 six,
proved, however, to be in vain as the West Indies Women lost the match by 8
wickets to give the South African’s a 3-0 lead in the Series, which eventually
ended with the Visitors triumphing 4-1.
Royston Chase’s award is most deserving after
his outstanding batting exploits in the recently
concluded St Kitts hosted 2021 Caribbean Premier
League, the ninth edition of “the biggest party in
sports!” Chase amassed 446 runs from 10 innings
to top the standings of the tournament’s highest run
getters. He also emerged as the batsman who struck
the most fours (35) during the 21-day tournament
which featured 33 matches between 6 competing
franchises: the Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon
Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, eventual tournament champions the St Kitts
Patriots, St Lucia Kings and the Trinidad & Tobago Night Riders.
