The West Indies Selections Panel, chaired by the Rt.Honourable Desmond Haynes, recently announced its 15 member squad for this year’s ICC 2022 World Cup to be played in Australia from October 16 to November 13. The tournament will begin with a 6-day group stage to determine the final four teams to qualify for the Super 12. Australia (the host), Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa have already been confirmed in the Super 12s, but the West Indies will have to qualify from the group stage in the Qualifier phase to advance to the Super 12 stage of the tournament. West Indies are in Group B along with Scotland, Ireland, and UAE, while the teams in Group A are: Sri Lanka, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and the Netherlands. The winner and runner-up teams of both Group A and Group B will qualify for the super 12.
The West Indies T20 World Cup plans have, however, subsequently been rocked by the October 3 news of Shimron Hetmeyer having been dropped from the squad. According to CWI’s Media Release Hetmeyer’s communicated inability to adhere to the arrangements made for him to get from Guyana to Australia has forced the Selectors to have him dropped from the squad and replaced by Barbados’ Shemarh Brooks!
