BCA Bim Bits: May Bites!

BOYCE PILOTS BOSCOBELLE TO RECORD SECOND BCA T20 SHIELD TITLE!
Keron Boyce is the toast of J.C.B Boscobelle, the new
champions of the BCA Intermediate Division Twenty20 Shield.
In a level-headed batting display at critical stages and aided by
two dropped catches in the deep in the last three overs, Player
Of The Match Boyce hit an unbeaten 56 at No. 4 after taking
two wickets to spur the St. Peter team to a thrilling one-wicket
win off the very last ball against Barbados Defence Force (BDF)
in a memorable Final at the Wayne Daniel Pavilion, Brereton,
St. Philip.
It meant that Boscobelle, hailing from a closely-knit community
in the north of the island, became the first team to grab two
titles in the six-year Competition. They have now contested a
record three Finals.
Boscobelle’s other capture of silverware was in 2020 when
they beat St. Catherine by two wickets at Kensington Oval.
They agonisingly lost by one run to Wanderers in last year’s
showdown at Foursquare Oval. There was no tournament in
2021 because of the covid-19 pandemic.
Summarized Scores:
Barbados Defence Force: 161/7-20 Ovrs. C Hall 75, A
Greenidge 37; K Boyce 2/18-3ovrs
Boscobelle: 162/9 – 20 Ovrs. K Boyce 56; A Greenidge 4/26-4

Bascobelle won by 1 run.
CAPTAIN KELANI CLARKE, LEADS ST. LEONARD’S BOYS’ TO 2023 BCA SIR EVERTON
WEEKS U13 TITLE!
Propelled by another outstanding all-round performance
from captain Kelani Clarke, St. Leonard’s Boys’ brushed aside
Foundation by ten wickets to capture the 2023 BCA Sir Everton
Weekes Under-13 limited overs Championship at Maurice King
Sports Complex, Briar Hall on June 1.
Player-Of-The-Match Clarke slammed 71 not out off 72 balls
including seven fours and one six as the Richmond Gap team, coached
by veteran Barbados Pride player, Jonathan Carter, easily reached a
revised target of 118 in 26 overs with three overs to spare following
a stoppage for rain with the score 78 off 14.5 overs. Clarke’s partner
Kieran Gittens made an unbeaten 26 of 71 deliveries.
Clarke also made headlines earlier in the tournament when he
slammed a monumental 246 not out off 80 balls with 44 fours and
seven sixes in a total of 436 for two off 23 overs against hapless St.
George, who crumbled for only four in four overs at Richmond Gap.
Among the spectators at the Final were experienced Barbados
Pride and West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder, former Barbados
and West Indies players Sulieman Benn and Ryan Hinds, who is a St.
Leonard’s alumnus and veteran BCA coach Dexter Toppin.

Barbados had on May 27 crushed Leeward Islands by eight wickets
in the fifth and final round to capture the Cricket West Indies (CWI)
Women’s Twenty20 Blaze title at Warner Park.
It meant that the Barbadians completed the double after retaining the
CG United Women’s Super50 Cup.
Captained by experienced West Indies Women fast bowler Shakera
Selman, Barbados ended on 16 points – the same as Guyana who
defeated Trinidad & Tobago by one run in a bizarre match at St. Paul’s,
which produced 77 runs off 38.1 overs with both teams being bowled
out – but they were declared champions on account of winning their
head-to-head clash.
The Leeward Islands, who lost all of their matches, scored 121 for five
off 20 overs. Divya Saxena top-scored with 33 not out off 50 balls
including one four at No. 3.
Off-spinner Theanny Herbert-Mayers took two for 12 off four overs.
Barbados triumphed with 15 balls remaining.
Kycia Knight led the way with 63 not out off 51 balls including nine
fours. She added 80 in 9.3 overs for the first wicket with Aaliyah
Alleyne, who made 32 off 26 balls including five boundaries.
OFF-SPINNER AMANDA EDWARDS TOOK TWO
FOR 12 OFF FOUR OVERS AS LEEWARD ISLANDS
USED EIGHT BOWLERS.
“We were expected to win,” said Selman, who led the side in the T20
Blaze only after West Indies Women’s skipper Hayley Matthews was
rested.
“Obviously last year we missed out narrowly in the T20s but we’re
really happy to have taken both. We finally saw the senior players
stepping up. We asked the seniors to step up in the absence of Hayley,
obviously that’s a big shoe to fill and I think they did that superbly.”
It was the third time Barbados performed the double. The others
were in 2018 and 2019.
Summarised scores:
Leeward Islands Women 121-5 (20 overs) (Divya Saxena 33 not
out, Rozel Liburd 20, Amanda Edwards 15, Melicia Clarke 13,
Jahzara Claxton 13; Theanny Herbert-Mayers 2-12).
Barbados Women 122-2 (17.3 overs) (Kycia Knight 63 not out –
51 balls, 9 fours; Aaliyah Alleyne 32, Trishan Holder 13; Amanda
Edwards 2-12)

SUPER DWAYNE SMITH AGAIN SCORES 500 BCA T20 CUP RUNS!
All hail Dwayne Romel Smith! The veteran all-rounder fittingly
played a key role with both bat and ball as Bayview Hospital
YMPC beat Wildey in a sensational super over finish at Desmond
Haynes Oval to advance to the Final of the BCA Elite/Division 1
Twenty20 Championship for the first time.
And Smith, the 40-year-old former Barbados and West Indies
player, also achieved another very special feat. He is now the
only batsman to twice score 500 runs in a season in the 15-year
Tournament – and mind you, consecutively – after hitting an
unbeaten half-century.
Smith scrambled two runs off the last ball of the innings to tie
the scores with YMPC chasing 148 for victory, then fell off the
first ball of the super over in which YMPC made 14 for one, and
dramatically climaxed by grabbing wickets off the first two balls
without conceding a run.
