The Caribbean Premier League’s 2026 season bowls off today, Friday, August 7, at St Vincent’s Arnos Vale Stadium. The long-anticipated fourteenth CPL season opener will feature the home team, the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, against the tournament’s returning franchise, the Jamaica Kingsmen, upon which all eyes will be duly focused!
A new franchise name and ownership, as well as a most welcome return to Sabina Park-hosted home matches, following a seven-year hiatus. Those are the initial ingredients that fans and followers of the Jamaica Kingsmen, formerly known as the Tallawahs, are hoping will result in the franchise copping its fourth championship title honors in this 2026 year’s edition of the Caribbean Premier League(CPL). The Biggest Party In Sports!
Having previously claimed championship title honors in the tournament’s 2023 inaugural year, with repeat performances in 2016 and 2022, the name-changed Kingsmen will be hoping to go all the way again this year. An ambitious quest that will undoubtedly be buoyed by the advantage of playing as many as four of their first five 2026 season matches in front of their typically large, highly supportive Sabina Park hometown fans.
Following a seven-year, 2029-2026, hiatus, CPL has thankfully returned to Jamaica with its local franchise under a new name and ownership. Kingsmen Sports Enterprise, an American company that has recently also invested in the Pakistan Premier League, is the franchise’s new owner. A fresh start that will, for its fans and followers, hopefully result in outstanding performances from start to finish.
Towards that end, the Kingsmen’s management have assembled a very solid squad for its 2026 campaign. Seemingly blessed with the perfect T20 format combinations of requisite experience, enthusiastic youth, solid, reliable, explosion-capable batting as well as economical, potentially bowling.
Jamaica Kingsmen’s powerful batting will be led by their local homeboys T20 stalwarts Rovman Powell and Andre Russell. Both are now undoubtedly in the twilight of their respective outstanding, world-class international careers. However, however, still fully capable of producing match winning performances. Current West Indian white-ballplayers Keacy Carty and Kirk McKenzie will also provide the Kingsmen with a valuable nucleus of experience, which, along with the additional power-hitting capabilities of the all-rounders Kemo Paul and Odean Smith, should stand them in good stead.
Unquestionably the most anticipated aspect of the Kingsmen’s 2026 CPL Season, though, will be the expected CPL debut of the Jamaica-born teenage leg-spinning sensation Vitel Orland Lawes. At just nineteen years of age, Lawes has already set international cricketing tongues wagging with his obviously supremely talented leg-spin bowling. He had an outstanding 2026 ICC U19 World Cup, claiming ten wickets whilst delivering more dot balls than any bowler in the entire tournament. A testament to both is wicket-taking abilities as well as his remarkable control.
Lawes made his West Indies One Day International (ODI) debut during the recent five-match home series against the visiting New Zealanders. He emerged as one of the West Indies’ leading wicket-takers in the series. He captured eight wickets at a highly commendable 5.30 economy rate, while impressing everyone with his guile, prodigious spin and outstanding control. How he fares during this year’s CPL will be very interesting indeed.
Following their aforementioned season opener against the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, the Kingsmen’s 2026 CPL glory quest will then get into full swing. Buoyed as it will be by the luxury of four successive Sabina Park-hosted matches, as the Kingsmen make their home turf debuts.
First up will be a July 11 fixture against the Barbados Royals to be quickly followed by matches against the Guyana Amazon Warriors, defending champions Trinbago Knightriders and finally the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. Those matches to be played at Sabina Park on August 13, 15 and 18 respectively.
Thanks to the outstanding generosity and expressed support of the Jamaica Tourist Board and in particular, its Canadian Director, the ever-dynamic Angella Bennett, guess who will be on site at Sabina Park to provide media coverage of all four of the Kingsmen’s 2026 CPL home fixtures? As an unashamed longstanding advocate of Caribbean cricket tourism, I have been overly blessed during my now thirty-plus years of covering West Indies cricket to have received the continuous outstanding support of some regional Tourism Boards. Of those, Jamaica and Barbados have been by far the most outstanding, although Antigua in all fairness also provided its fair share of noteworthy support.
Such support has always, invariably, been forthcoming from outstanding individuals who shared the very same beliefs as myself. Individuals like Jamaica’s Sandra Scott and, again, currently Angella Bennett, countless Toronto-based Bajan Representatives from Gregory Armstrong as far back as the early nineties, through Cheryl Carter, Peter Mayers and Stacey Hutchinson to Antigua’s Madeline Blackman and Tameka Wharton have all been outstanding in their expressed support of my cricket tourism activities. For which I will always remain forever grateful.
Regrettably, however, the Barbados Tourism Authority’s current Canadian representatives don’t seem to be at all interested in pursuing any available cricket tourism opportunities. Somewhat ironic timing to say the least, given Barbados’ hosting of this year’s CPL Playoffs and Final. In that regard, they must have taken a page out of Guyana Tourism’s book of Canadian market development disinterest. To the best of my knowledge not a single Canadian cricket journalist was ever invited to Guyana at any time during the country’s three-year, 2023-2025 hosting of the CPL’s Playoffs and Final. Or, for that matter, even more recently for the country’s annually-hosted Global Super League T20 Tournament.
Kudos then to Jamaica Tourism. Let’s Go Kingsmen!
