Reviera Cottle hit an unbeaten half-century and off-spinner Xaundre
Baptiste took four wickets on the June 20 opening day of the Barbados
Under-17 two-day trial match at Lears. Cottle, a St. Leonard’s Boys’
student, made 64 not out off 54 balls with 12 boundaries as Damani Roach
X1 closed on 109 for one in reply to a first innings total of 181 all out by
Preston Clarke X1. Cottle has added 95 with Kevion Newton, who is 24

Queen’s College student Baptiste snatched four for 25 off 9.1 overs after

Large Crowd Support For 2023 BCA T20 Competitions
Finals!
The Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) is extremely pleased with the positive
response shown by thousands of patrons who attended the BCA T20 Shield
(June 3), T20 Plate (June 10) and T20 Cup (June 11) Finals held recently at
Brereton (Wayne Daniel Complex), Desmond Haynes Oval and Weymouth
cricket venues respectively. The increased excitement at each T20 venue has
been as a result of improved marketing of the competitions, an increased social
media presence and also the expert radio coverage provided of each match.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the BCA, Dr. Roland Toppin, expressed his
excitement at what has been achieved to date:
‘Just fantastic! Seeing the huge crowds at the Finals has been overwhelming and
of course the matches have been exciting.’
BCA Manager, Marketing and Communications, Mr. Steven Leslie, highlighted
the contribution of the radio commentary team to the overall quality of the
production:
‘We also wish to thank all of the radio commentators who have brought live
ball by ball updates to the listening public on VOB 92.9FM from the 1st series
of matches that commenced on April 15, 2023. This group of individuals will
continue to provide quality coverage during the remainder of the domestic
season.’
The BCA also created history by carrying the T20 Cup FINAL between BWU
Gladiola and Bayview Hospital YMPC on June 11 Live on FLOW Sports
Television to an expanded audience of 240,000 cricket fans beyond Barbados’
shores.

HINDS, BRANCH, NURSE STAR AS WINDWARD GRAB BCA
DIVISION 2 T20 PLATE TITLE.
Windward blew away Lords by eight wickets with as many as 19 balls to spare to
WI WICKETS 14
capture the June 10 2023 BCA Division 2 Twenty20 Plate Championship
at Desmond Haynes Oval. In what turned out to be a lop-sided Final,
the 102-year-old Club, based at Lucas Street in the south-eastern parish
of St. Philip, displayed cohesion and hunger for success, much to the
enjoyment of their fans.
Lords were simply let down by their batting after scoring at roughly
eight runs an over in the powerplay. Sent in, the Lowlands, St. Lucy side
passed 50 with only one wicket down but then sensationally lost their
last nine wickets for 61 runs in 12.3 overs to be all out for 119 in 19.2
overs.
Then, paved by an opening partnership of 68 in 8.3 overs between
veteran Alan Branch and the heavy-set Glenmar Hinds, Windward
made light work of the target. Hinds, a 24-year-old resident of Oldbury,
St. Philip and packing 270 pounds, made 52 off 40 balls with five fours
and four sixes before he was bowled by left-arm spinner Mario Boyce.
A former Lester Vaughan Secondary student, born in the central parish
of St. Thomas, Hinds ended the tournament with 431 runs including one
hundred and three half-centuries at an average of 39.18. He smashed 43
fours and 29 sixes and boasted a strike rate of 165.76.
Rashoun Archer ended the competition as the top wicket-taker for
Windward with 16.
It was the third season for the tournament. Midas Magic Ipswich
were the inaugural champions in 2020, beating BNOC by seven runs
in the Final at Kensington Oval. Cupid Cavaliers captured the title last
year, defeating Greens by seven wickets at Wayne Daniel Pavilion in
Brereton, St. Philip.
There were no BCA competitions in 2021 because of the covid-19
pandemic

ASHLEY NURSE, EXPERIENCE SPUR GLADIOLA TO
SECOND BCA T20 CUP TITLE!
Bang, bang, bang! Off three consecutive balls in the penultimate over
of the match, Ashley Nurse, the Barbados Workers Union Gladiola
captain and all-rounder, slogged swept Bayview Hospital YMPC legspinner
Mario Miller over forward-square, midwicket and midwicket
again.
All three strokes produced sixes and Gladiola, chasing 158 to win in 20
overs, triumphed by five wickets with seven balls remaining to capture
the BCA Elite/Division 1 Twenty20 Cup title for the second time in
three seasons.
It was the sort of thrilling finish, which a big crowd at the Police Sports
Club, Weymouth no doubt enjoyed.
Gladiola (formerly known as Cable
& Wireless, BET and LIME), were
appearing in their third Final, while it was
the first for YMPC.
For Ashley Nurse, a 34-year-old former
Barbados and West Indies white-ball
player and one of three Nurses in the
Gladiola team – the others are former
Barbados players, batsman Martin Nurse
and fast bowling all-rounder Ryan Nurse,
the coach/player – the match was very
special. Apart from scoring 24 not out
off 15 balls and adding an unbroken 58
off 28 balls with another experienced
bloke, top-scorer and Player Of The
Match Matthew Jones (39 not out, 19
balls, five fours and two sixes), he was
the only player from Gladiola, now
based at Rices in St. Philip, to appear in
all three of their T20 Cup Finals.
The first was in the inaugural year of
the Competition in 2008, co-incidentally
also at Weymouth when under the
name of Cable & Wireless, they lost by
four runs to Maple.
Ashley Nurse also played a key role with
the bat in the 2020 Final, scoring 38 not
out off 22 balls including three fours
and three sixes in a 36-run win against
Wanderers at Kensington Oval.
S i g n i f i c a n t ly as we l l , G l a d i o l a
wicketkeeper/batsman Randy Thomas,
who played a solitary first-class match
for Barbados two decades ago and who
was set to celebrate his 41st birthday
June 15, also turned out in the 2008 BCA
T20 Cup Final for Cable & Wireless.
Thomas made a vital 34 off 37 balls with
two fours and one six at No. 4 after a
solid job with the gloves. He did not
concede a bye in 13 extras of YMPC’s
157 for eight. Thomas put on 66 in 8.2
overs with all-rounder Kemar Harte (31
off 18 balls, 3 fours and 1 six) for the
fourth wicket after Gladiola were under
early pressure on 23 for three by the
fifth over.
And mind you, it was Thomas’ only
T20 Cup match for the season in
the absence of the talented, former
Barbados and West Indies Under-19
team wicketkeeper/batsman Rivaldo
Clarke, who is in Antigua as part of a
West Indies High Performance Camp.
On reflection, YMPC can concede that
they were about 20 runs short after
former Barbados and West Indies allrounder
Dwayne Smith and Raymond
Kellman added 92 in 10.1 overs for the
first wicket. Kellman hit the top-score of
48 off 31 balls including seven fours and
one six, while Smith made 47 off 44 deliveries with four
fours and two sixes after the Beckles Road team won
the toss.
Medium-pacer Korie Miller took four for 31 off three
overs after coming on as the last of seven bowlers
to finish as the top wicket-taker for the season. In 12
matches (he bowled in 10 innings), Miller grabbed 22
wickets at an average of 8.27 with an economy rate of
7.04, having sent down 25.5 overs.
Matthew Jones, in his first season with Gladiola after
captaining and helping to save Carlton from demotion
to the First division last season, took two for 16 off four
overs.
For the second straight season, the 40-year-old Dwayne
Smith was the only batsman to amass over 500 runs. He
remains the sole player to score 500 runs in a season as
well. His aggregate was 552 including one hundred and
five half-centuries at an average of 69.00 in ten matches.
In nine matches last season, Smith scored 514 runs
(Ave: 73.42) including a record three centuries (he now
has a record six tons all told).
