After putting in a lot of effort and
persevering, the 23-year-old father
of one has been rewarded for leaving
his position at a security company to
concentrate on cricket. Joseph is another
happy alumnus of New Amsterdam,
Berbice’s Tucber Park Cricket Club.

Shamar Joseph, who is from a little
community tucked away in the Guyanese
bush, came to Australia for
the 2023–24 tour without any prior
international experience but with a
reputation for bowling quickly. Just
eighteen months prior, he had chosen to
quit his work as a security night watchman
in order to devote himself full-time to
cricket. His choice was nearly instantly
rewarded with a first-class debut and a
CPL contract.

A week later, in January 2024, he was
picked for his Test debut at the Adelaide
Oval, where he would
take Steve Smith out with his opening ball
after making an impression in the tour
match against the Cricket Australia XI.
