Wickets April 2024 Laurels & Darts

Five most worthy laurels and only two deserving darts for
this Wickets April Issue. Laurels have been deservedly awarded
to Trinidad & Tobago’s Prime Minister Keith Rowley, West Indies
Women’s Captain Hayley Matthews, Trinidad & Tobago
Red Force batter Amir Jangoo, Royston Chase and Mikyle Louis. This Issue’s two
darts have been duly been thrown at West Indies Head Coach
Daren Sammy and T20 captain Rovman Powell.

APRIL 2024 LAURELS:
Dr Keith Rowley is fully deserving of a laurel
and the highest praise for his agreement to
host and chair a long-awaited West Indies
cricket symposium later this month. Entitled
” Reinvigorating West Indies Cricket – A
Symposium for Strategic Collaboration and
Innovation,” the twoday conference will be
held in Trinidad & Tobago from April 25-26,
2024.

Another Tirinbagonian Amir Jangoo for scoring his maiden double century, 218, during the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force’s 2024 Caribbean Regional 4Day tournament’s sixth round match against the Combined Campuses & Collages. Jango’s 218 was made off 238 balls and included 15 fours and 10
sixes.

All-rounder Roston Chase was the star
of the Barbados Pride’s 2024 Caribbean Ragional FourDay tournament’s sixth-round encounter against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes. After belting an ultra aggressive 87ball 127 that included 10 fours and 7 sixes when
Barbados batted, Chase returned
with the ball to capture 7/67-33.2
overs to help rout the Hurricanse
for 311 in their second innings as
the Pride romped to a nine-wicket
victory.

Leeward Islands opening
batter Mikyle Louis continued
his prolific run of form during the
seventh and final round of the 2024
Regional 4Day tournament. Louis
recored his thrid century of the
tournament, an even 100 made
off of 193 balls with 9 fours and 1 six
included, in the Hurricanes match
against the Windward Islands
Volcanoes. A knock that must now
surely have confirmed his place on
the West Indies squad for its three
Tests tour to England this coming
July.

Women’s Captain Hayley
Matthews for her outstanding
leading-from-the front allround performance in the first ODI of the West Indies
current series against Pakistan. Mathews blasted an
unbeaten 140 not out, made from 150 balls with 15
fours and 1 six, to lead her team to a formidable
269/8-50 first strike total. She then returned with the
ball capturing 3/17-6 as Pakistan’s Women were
bundled out for 156 in response.

West Indies whiteball cricket Head
Coach Daren Sammy for engaging in double-talk
during Cricket West Indies March 8 Barbados Press Conference. Sammy in responding to a question on the possibilities for Shamar Joseph’s inclusion in the West Indies 2024 T20 World Cup squad stated “My team will be picked on performance not hype!” A
direct contradiction of the statements he had made

earlier this year immediately after Joseph’s
outstanding performances during the recent
Australia Test Series. “I can’t wait to get
my hands on Shamar Joseph,” was what
Sammy had said then. To be followed just
days later by” Shamar Joseph has created a
World Cup team selection headache!”

West Indies captain Roveman
Powel for his public admission of having
tried to convince Sunil Narine to return to
the West Indies team for the forthcoming T20
World Cup. Narine who officially retired from
international cricket earlier this year, has
repeatedly demonstrated his reluctance
to represent the West Indies in international
matches. Move On Rovam.
